Membership Nominated Awards
The Godfrey P. Oakley, Jr. Award
This award is given to an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of birth defects. Since 2001, NBDPN has presented this prestigious award in Dr. Oakley’s honor. Dr. Oakley was instrumental in setting the birth defects agenda at CDC for many decades and in focusing national attention on the effects of folic acid in preventing NTDs. In 2001 this award was given to Dr. Oakley.
The Mark Canfield State Leadership Award
This is an award to honor the outstanding contribution (or leadership) by a state registry in the development or expansion of birth defects surveillance, or its use in the promotion of prevention services. This award is presented to a program or agency during the in-person NBDPN Annual Meeting.
Birth Defects Education and Prevention Award
This is an award to honor an agency's or program's efforts to raise public awareness of birth defects through innovative and collaborative approaches that can serve as a model for other programs. This award presented to a program or agency during the in-person NBDPN Annual Meeting.
Russell S. Kirby Mentoring Award
This award is given to an individual who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to mentoring, advising, and building supportive environments for colleagues in the field of birth defects surveillance, research, and prevention. NBDPN presents this award in Dr. Kirby’s
honor for his years of supporting the growth of birth defects programs, as well as mentoring students, staff, and other professionals. (Nominations will come in from membership and then sent to the Award Committee and Board for final decision)
NBDPN Board of Directors Chair or Vice Chair Nominations
Distinguished Service Award (Selected by the Vice Chair at time of Task Force formation)
This award honors an NBDPN member who has provided significant time and effort over many years in support of the mission and goals of the National Birth Defects Prevention Network. More than one may be presented in a year. The BOD Vice Chair solicits recommendations from the Board and selects the final recipient(s).
Board of Directors Award (Selected by the Chair at time of Task Force formation)
This award honors an NBDPN member who has made significant contributions important to the mission and goals of the National Birth Defects Prevention Network, Inc. The Chair solicits recommendations from the Board and selects the final recipient.

Building Bridges Award
This award is given to individuals or groups who contribute to furthering engagement, collaborations, or partnerships to enhance birth defects awareness and prevention. Nominees may be NBDPN members, other organizations, and persons such as those with lived experience in birth defects, researchers, or advocates. Recommendations will come from the Award Committee to Officers
